Why Open Source Budgeting Software is Not the Solution

Oh, the strategic budgeting grind. It’s absolutely necessary, but if you don’t have the right tools and software handy, it can be a huge pain!

Let’s face it – there’s new software being developed constantly. That makes it pretty difficult for businesses to figure out how to choose the best software solution for their unique budgeting needs!

Some businesses have now started to seek open source software, hoping it will be cheaper and easier to use for strategic budgeting. Unfortunately, that’s not the case! Here’s why:

Lack of user-friendliness

Not everyone is as tech-savvy as a programmer. So, while open-source software may have the benefit of being more versatile than programs from the past, they can be way too complex for the average person to manage easily. I mean, you practically need to know how to code just to figure out how to apply open-source software to your business – yikes!

Keep in mind the 80/20 rule. When you start to implement open-source software, there may be loads of customization necessary to get it up and running. If you have more than 20% to customize, you’re running into unnecessary cost and complexity and therefore wasting both time and money!

What your business really needs is something immediately accessible to your employees. When they begin the strategic budgeting process, they should be able to understand what they’re looking at right away.

Weak support networks

Say you run into an issue that you and your employees just can’t figure out. Something is up, but it doesn’t seem to be anything on your end. You’re just about ready to tear your hair out – why can’t this budget process be over with already!

After hours wasted trying to figure out what’s wrong, you and your team come to the only logical conclusion: it must be an issue with the software you’re using. Everyone is pretty much ready to give up, so you decide to try and contact the creators to fix the issue.

But with open-source software, that might not be possible.

Why?

Because open-source software is developed by teams of people working (often separately) to create a useful program. Once it’s up and running, they don’t always stick around.

Guess what that means for you? That’s right – if you have an issue with their software, you could be out of luck. You can never truly know how dependable open-source software might be, and you can’t feel confident about your access to the team who designed it.
